Funnel Cake

On arriving in Texas we were lucky enough to catch the Fort Worth Stock Show and Rodeo.  What an experience! Cowboy hats, boots, belt buckles, and diamante studded jeans were all the go.  This was our first rodeo and our first introduction to funnel cake.  Funnel cake is a popular food at carnivals, sporting events, fairs etc.

They are quite quick and easy to make and an extra bonus of making them at home is you can control the size.  The ones at the Rodeo were the size of a full dinner plate, the 4 of us shared one and it was plenty.  Batter is streamed into hot oil and once cooked they are doused with powered sugar on top. Then you add syrups, topping, cream, fruit, anything really.

I based our homemade funnel cakes on this recipe and converted to the Thermomix (recipe below) making the batter super fast to prepare.

When dispensing the batter into the oil you can use a standard funnel, using your finger to block the spout when you don’t want the batter to come out or a jug will also do.  I used my Wilton Easy-Pour Funnel which was perfect.

We had ours with powdered sugar and chocolate topping.

The recipe states that these are best eaten straight away while hot.  I have frozen some (as the recipe made heaps) and will update you all on how they go being reheated in the oven when we can face eating some more!

Funnel Sequence

Thermomix Funnel Cake Recipe

2 eggs

240 grams milk

240 grams water

1/2 teaspoon vanilla

430 grams plain flour (all-purpose)

1 tablespoon baking powder

1/4 teaspoon salt

Put all the ingredients in the Thermomix, 10 seconds, speed 6.  That’s it, ready to cook.

Heat about 3-5 cm of oil in a pan to approx 190°C (375°F) or until when a drop of batter instantly bubbles and begins to brown.

Using your funnel or jug, stream the batter into the hot oil to form a circular pattern.

When it looks like it is golden brown on the bottom, carefully (hot oil remember!) turn the funnel cake over to cook on the other side.

Once nice and brown remove from oil and drain on kitchen paper.

Sprinkle with powdered sugar, top with your favourites and enjoy while hot.
